ROOT CANALS

Root Canals are the stereotypical reason why people fear the dentist. And while root canals aren’t something anyone looks forward to, they aren’t the frightening experience most people think they are.

Windermere Dental & Medical Spa understands the hesitation people have about root canals and will work hard to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

WHAT ARE ROOT CANALS?

Root canals are done when the nerve of a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The infection or inflammation can be caused from decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, faulty crowns, or a crack in the tooth to name a few.

HOW MUCH DO ROOT CANALS HURT?

For whatever reason, people are frightened to hear the word root canal. There is a fear of pain associated with the procedure that has been passed down from generation to generation. However, with modern dental anesthesia, there is little discomfort during a root canal treatment.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A ROOT CANAL?

The first step to the root canal procedure is to apply the local anesthetic to the affected area. Once the area is numbed, the procedure can begin. The procedure begins with removing the nerve of the tooth as well as cleaning out and enlarging the canal. Then, the root is filled and a filling or crown is placed over the tooth.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

The tooth and the area surrounding can be sore for a couple days following the procedure and can be medicated with over the counter medication such as ibuprofen or Aleve. It’s recommended that you try to avoid chewing on that side while the tooth heals. Once the pain subsides, root canals have a record of over 90% success and rarely needs a return visit. The biggest potential problem comes from the crown that is put on the top of the tooth versus the filling of the root itself.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT A ROOT CANAL?

The number one thing you can do to prevent a root canal is to regularly see the dentist. The dentist can spot a potential problem often before it is symptomatic. Once a tooth becomes painful, a root canal or extraction is likely needed. By identifying a problem before a tooth hurts, the dentist can often save the tooth from needing a root canal or extraction and result in less out of pocket cost to the patient.
